Five year old son says, “Daddy take the asthma away”
and a new business starts out of a passion to help others.
Three years ago, Aspen Hill father and businessman, Mike Geary went to sleep to the coughing sounds of his two young children suffering from asthma.
“It was so bad,” said Geary, “we were considering a move west for cleaner air.”
He discovered by happenstance the dangerous effects of a toxic microbiological organism named mold. It can go undetected by site and smell, but can readily infect the lung’s bronchi causing shortness of breath and in some cases severe medical conditions including asthma.
“Once I was able to identify and remove the mold area from the children’s environment, the coughing attacks stopped immediately,” says Geary. His family’s nightly asthma attacks ceased, but he began to hear similar stories from friends and associates. After one and half years of research and training, he started offering mold detection services through his existing business.
“It just made sense,” says Mike, a 20 year veteran of home air condition and HVAC contracting. “to start a business that actually assess homes and commercial properties for mold. I know first hand the great need and benefits of finding the stuff.”
Demand for his mold detection services were stronger than anticipated. Within a short time it was obvious that this should be a stand-alone company. He teamed with a certified industrial hygienist and formed Mold Scan, Incorporated in 2003. His second location has recently opened in Northern Virginia.
Twelve months later, with a year of war stories and training, Geary is emphatic about helping people fight the dreadful effects of mold.
